Most of these companies are members of The Car Rental Council of Ireland. This is a representative trade organisation for the car hire sector in Ireland.

All member car hire firms are committed to providing a high quality customer service experience. The main airports in Ireland include, Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Kerry and Knock, with car hire desks located in the arrivals hall. Read our 7 recommendations below for finding the cheapest car rental package.

Type of car and duration: Prices for hiring a car for a week can sometimes be less than hiring a car for the weekend or 4/5 days. Review all options to get the best deal. Book well in advance for special offers, last minute bookings will almost certainly hit your pocket. Plan your holiday to avoid peak season as car hire companies generally charge their highest rates over the summer months.

Most car hire providers usually offer the best rates for online bookings. A small car is not always the cheapest option, as compact cars are usually in high demand. Explore all packages before deciding on the type of car that suits your budget. Finally, once you’ve found a good deal, book as soon as possible as most offers only run for a limited period.

CDW also known as collision damage waiver: Car rental excess insurance also known as collision damage waiver (CDW) is an additional add on to your car hire package. The insurance policy covers the excess amount in the event of a claim should the car you are driving be damaged or involved in an accident. The excess amount will generally range from circa €500 to €2,000. In the event of an accident or collision you may be liable to pay the excess amount. Most car hire providers will require a copy of this policy.

Adding additional drivers: Adding a second driver? Some car rental firms may charge a higher premium to add this option once you arrive at your destination, so book this in advance. Drivers age will affect the rate, standard prices will be based on drivers aged 25 to 65 years. If you fall outside this age bracket a higher price may apply.

Car rental fuel policy: There are generally two main fuel options available when hiring a car, a rental with a full tank and a rental with very little fuel. A full tank means that you must return the car with a full tank of fuel otherwise you may be liable for additional charges. Alternatively you may wish to opt for a hire car with very little fuel, which will mean you will need to drive to the nearest petrol station as soon as you leave the airport to refuel. Some car hire firms have now introduced a new fuel policy whereby you are charged for a full tank on arrival, so you can return the car with an empty tank, this policy varies from company to company.

Car hire damage: Car hire providers are very observant when it comes to the condition of their rental vehicles. Take note of existing scratches and damage on the car, use your camera phone or camcorder to take photos as evidence. Some cars may have existing scratches or dents so it’s worthwhile bringing these to the attention of the car hire representative. You may even consider checking that the interior of the car and spare tyre are in good condition, if not make a note.

Once you have taken these notes and photos we would recommend that you ask someone at the car rental desk to confirm and acknowledge the damage. This should also be done when returning the car to confirm that you have returned the car in good condition. Always retain this paper work for you own records.

Adding a satnav or child seats: If you are planning on using a satnav or child seat while abroad, we would highly recommend bringing your own, as this extra can be quite expensive. For example it could cost up to €90 to hire a satnav for a week. If you don’t have a satnav it may be cheaper to purchase one for your trip. Some airlines will allow you to take a child seat at no additional charge, check with your airline in advance.

Note the terms and conditions: Always review the terms and conditions. Pay particular attention to additional driver charges, car hire excess insurance, age restrictions, fuel policy and cancellation charges. Ensure you are aware of the driving laws and customs before travelling to another country. Here are some examples of laws in popular destinations. In Spain, you may be liable to pay a fine if you do not have a reflective hazard triangle in the vehicle. It is illegal in some states of North America to drive with opened cans or bottles of alcohol and in France it is mandatory to carry an unused Breathalyzer Kit in the car at all times.

Shop around for the best deal: Finally; always shop around when renting a car; you will be surprised at how much you can save. Most car hire providers offer great online deals, remember if you book over the telephone you may be charged additional fees. Ensure you are comparing like with like, the easiest way to do this is to compare the basic packages. Thank you for visiting airportcarhire, terms, conditions and privacy policy apply.
